Gaining celebrity after being arrested for illegally transporting snakes into Tennessee, so-called
Pastor Jamie Coots gained even more notoriety after being featured on the National Geographic reality TV show "Snake Salvation," which highlighted the practice.

Coots was bitten by a snake over the weekend at a Kentucky church service. As has been his usual practice through the years after being bitten, he refused medical treatment. He had been bitten 8 times in the past, according to his son Cody Coots.

A little over a year ago in January 2013, Coots was arrested in Tennessee for transporting two copperhead snakes and three rattlesnakes. The snakes were taken away by Wildlife officials and Coots was given a sentence of one year of unsupervised probation.

At the time of the snake bite, Coots was holding the rattlesnake at the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name Church in Middlesboro, which he pastored.

An ambulance was called to the facility, but Coots had already went home. When he was contacted at home to see if he wanted to be treated for the snake bite, he refused the offer.

About an hour after the ambulance left, emergency workers were called to the home, only to find Coots had died from the snake bite.

The reasoning behind the practice is a literal interpretation of this place in Mark:

"And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."

National Geographic released this statement:

"Those risks were always worth it to him and his congregants as a means to demonstrate their unwavering faith. We were honored to be allowed such unique access to pastor Jamie and his congregation during the course of our show, and give context to his method of worship."

Kentucky Snake Handling Preacher Gets Reality Show on National Geographic

After a bout with the law in Tennessee which garnered national attention, Kentucky preacher Jamie Coots of Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name church of Middlesboro, Ky., and Andrew Hamblin of Tabernacle Church of God in LaFollette, Tenn., will get their own reality TV show on the National Geographic Channel.

Coots was arrested in by officials in Tennessee for transporting snakes into the state, which are illegal for private citizens to own there, although legal in Kentucky. After a routine traffic stop, five rattlesnakes were discovered in Coots' car, all of which were confiscated by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Apparently the interesting headlines attracted the attention of National Geographic, which made a deal with Coots and Hamblin. Hamlin was featured in the story, commenting on the arrest of Coots for transporting the snakes. One of the episodes will cover that particular story.

Dubbed "Snake Salvation," the series will launch on Sept. 10 at 8 p.m. Central time on the National Geographic Channel.

The scripture used to justify the snake-handling practice is found in Mark 16, where it says this: “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”

Not only will the preachers handle snakes, but people in the congregation will as well, based upon the belief that the above scripture includes everyone, and not just a special few.

Nonetheless, Coots says that while the series will include the snake-handling aspects of his belief, it will go beyond that to show the belief system goes beyond only holding and passing snakes around. To that end the show will include how the people deal with life on a daily basis. Tension will be seen because of the problems members face, including poverty, drugs, and marital problems.

And yes. In the series viewers will see one person that is bitten by a snake while handling it.

Snake Handler Jamie Coots Pleads Guilty

Jamie Coots, a so-called snake-handling Kentucky preacher, has pleaded guilty to illegally having poison snakes in Tennessee.

Per the plea, Coots will be able to keep the boxes he transported the snakes in, while receiving a one-year unsupervised probation. Coots had requested the return of the boxes after he was arrested because they had sentimental value to him.

Coots acquired the snakes in Alabama and was transporting them back to his Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name Church in Middlesboro, Kentucky, when he was stopped for having windows with too dark of a tint.

The snakes Coots was transporting, three rattlesnakes and two copperheads, have yet to find a permanent home. At this time they're at a zoo in Sevierville, Tennessee. It appears the zoo will have the first choice of whether to keep them or not, although they could be placed at a different, permitted facility, said TWRA Agent Joe Durnin.

"Pastor" Wants Snakes Back after Wildlife Officers from Tennessee Confiscate Them

A so-called pastor from Bell County in eastern Kentucky is fighting to get his snakes back after having them taken from him by Tennessee wildlife officials.

Gregory Coots, aka Jamie Coots, calls himself a pastor, and apparently works out of the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name Church in Middlesboro.

He's one of those that misguidedly uses the snakes as part of services at the church building.

Coots was traveling in Knoxville when he was pulled over by police because of his windows being tinted dark. It was at that time the snakes were discovered by police, who called in the wildlife officers to take the snakes away. The snakes included two copperheads and three rattlesnakes.

He is charged with transporting wildlife and being in possession of them illegally.

In Kentucky Coots has went through a similar ordeal, although he asserts he has a permit to transport them in Bell County, Kentucky now.

When asked if he had any documentation for the snakes, Coots replied that he didn't, and at that time the snakes were removed and taken away.

Coots is fighting to get the snakes back, and has a hearing scheduled in Knoxville on February 25th.

It's of course a faulty and silly reading of the text, and a number of people adhering to the practice have died from "taking up the serpents."
