Walton, Ky Mayor Indicted for Theft of Public Funds

The mayor of Walton, Ky., Phil Trzop, was indicted for allegedly taking money from the Boone County Water District.

According to the indictment, Trzop, who was also the Boone County Water District Manager, abused the public trust when he kept part of the money made when selling scrap metal from repairs of the water lines.

Approximately $30,000 in scrap metal from the repair jobs was sold over the last three years, will all of it required to go into a general fund of the county. According to Deputies, Trzop decided to pay employees Christmas bonuses from the sales, but after that there was about $10,000 that couldn't be found. Trzop admitted to having taken some of it home for himself.

Interestingly, Trzop was suspended without pay from his Boone County Water District job, but still remains in place as the mayor.

Trzop is out of jail on a $20,000 bond. He faces from five to ten years in jail if convicted.
